The Media Center’s Dragons, Dreams and Daring Deeds Reading Challenge has begun! . In an effort to use paper more wisely, grades 2-5 will be turning in a reading log rather than individual book report papers. The reading log should be turned in after the third book has been read. Once this has been recorded, your child’s log will be returned to them and their name will go up on the large bulletin board under the Unicorn Level. They will turn in their logs again after completing the sixth book, and their name will be moved to the Wizard Level. When the tenth book is completed, their name will move to the Dragon Slayer Level and they will qualify for the end of the year celebration. Please make sure your child is reading a book suitable to his/her reading level and they complete the log entry when they finish the book.
For grades preK-1 I believe it may be easier to continue with the book reports. Many teachers do reports in class which are turned in for credit in the media center challenge. Also, it may be difficult for the younger children to keep track of a separate reading log. I will have forms available in the media center or children may draw a picture or do their own creation as we have allowed in the past. Any parent of a child in this age group who wishes to have a reading log instead is welcome to have one. If you choose this option, you can dictate for your child if he/she is not writing sentences yet.

Surf’s Up!
This site can be used for all grades, but is especially helpful for first graders to practice using the mouse and keyboard. The site is ABC’Ya (www.abcya.com). Once on the site, your child may choose his/her grade level to get to learning games. While your child is reviewing concepts learned in school, he/she is also getting practice in manipulating the computer mouse, which will be helpful in media class as we advance our computer skills.
